    Inquiring Minds Want To Know...

When I posted my last topic about feeling the time had come for me to request a different work schedule, I never stopped to think about posting the outcome as a topic all by itself. After discussing my situation with my boss, I posted the outcome of that meeting as a comment. From the amount of private messages and emails I've received in the past several days, it's apparent that very few people saw the comment I wrote. Below is the my comment written to all the incredible people who continue to stand with me:
Thanks everyone for all the positive input. When I requested to be put on part-time status, I was immediately given the option of working 3 -12 hour days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) so I could keep my full time status in order to keep all my benefits, but I'd still be able to spend more time at home with my parents as well...a truly win-win situation I think!

Communication is essential to any good relationship.  At work, you don't have to give everyone every detail of your personal life, but at least keeping your boss informed about things that might effect your attendence at work  shows you take your job seriously.  The past few years my boss has been aware of my parental role reversal and their declining health. She actually shows a real interest in my situation because I think this is something many adult children face. Grabbing pointers from others who have been there themselves comes in handy when it's your turn to step up to the plate.

It's nice to have such a supportive employer and you never really know just how valued you are as an employee until there's a critical situation in which they can either help you achieve your goals or they can strictly play it by the book and do what they think is best for business. In this case, they did both and I deeply appreciate all the moral support I continually receive at work, in my private life and via my blog.  Once again...a heartfelt thank you to all my fellow abnormally normal people who not only read my ramblings, but who have jumped in here and interact because birds of a feather flock together!

Today I feel like a proud peacock...

    Karen,
Happy Easter to you and your family. Find sometime for yourself - a walk on the beach would do just fine.   Know you are in my thoughts.    Bittersweet

    Hello Red Kitten,
Happy St. Patrick's Day although a day late. While you didn't wear green, I hope you manage some corned beef and cabbage. Actually our dinner turned out fairly well but my favorite part is the cabbage with plenty of butter!

I'm happy that your employer worked out a viable schedule for you and that you have the added time with your parents. I can empathize with the hardship and pain and my only suggestion is take it day by day and find alittle time for yourself.

In my readings the past few years, several writers have written on this aspect of life and handled it well; Linda Davis on Katherine S. White in her book "Onward and Upward,' and Madeleine L'engle's "Two-Part Invention: The Story of a Marriage."  She also wrote "The Summer of the Great-Grandmother"  which was also a good read.

I hope you are taking care of yourself the best way possible. Life was never intended to be easy so find those moments where you can truly enjoy.  I was looking at your pictures of Pensecola Beach. Truly a lovely beach.  You take care.  Bittersweet

    Dear Red Kitten,

I am glad for you that all has worked out.  Be blessed, and I send my heartfelt love to your "reverse parenting" role.  You seem to have a big heart and therefore lends to the opening of others' hearts.  Peace, Love & Together

    Red Kitten -

I'm not overly surprised at your bosses reaction as it sounds like she understands you and admires your work and knows your not a sluff off just looking for a customized work schedule. Similar situations are happening in so many families that bosses need to be informed, that way they know in advance that you might need to leave at a moments notice and not have it sound like an excuse just to get out of work early that day. The best thing you can do you're already doing, effective communication! *Applause* to you!!!

    Warmly -

I think all the positive vibes coming my way definitely played a big part in the positive outcome...thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers.  Happy St Patrick's Day to you, also...I feel like a failure as an Irishmen this year (I didn't even wear green today SHAME ON ME.  My ancestors will haunt me no doubt!!!)...by the way, I think you asked me about my name awhile ago and I never responded.  Yes, my name is Karen and please feel free to use it if you want to, but Kitten will suffice also. Whatever your preference is will be fine with me.

    Kitten,
Glad things worked out.  Can't say it was my prayers for you, but every bit helps, especially when dealing with large life changes.
    Happy St. Patrick' Day
